PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Mukund Mehta Sep 18, 2020,

Dear Friends:

Hope you’re doing fine and keeping yourselves busy. The following is a brief report of the Thursday, September 10, 2020 Zoom meeting. The report is shortened since the meeting was recorded and placed on YouTube by our member Mr. Jyotindrabhai Patel. Thanks Jyotindrabhai. The link is:

The meeting had two sessions, viz., a medical lecture and a musical program. The meeting started with a prayer by Bhartiben & Dipak Mehta. Members paid a tribute to Dr. Mrs. Alakpita Pardeshi who recently passed away. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to her husband Dr. Ram Pardeshi and the family. Condolence messages may be sent to Ram@epardeshi and may God rest her soul in peace.

Dr. Ram Pardeshi, along with Drs. Saroj & Indravadan Shah, has rendered valuable community services to persuade and set up an independent unit for Indian patients at Parker Jewish Institute nursing home.

1 (A) Dr. Hasit Thakore’s Presentation:

Dr. Hasit Thakore, Neurologist, gave an hour-long talk on Neurological Conditions and Current Pandemic. He kicked off by concentrating on what happens to patients in need of neurological treatment when society is shut down due to widespread pandemic severely restricting medical help. He quoted Dr. William Osler, an Infectious Diseases Specialist, who mentioned 125 years ago about three enemies to the humankind, viz., war, famine and infections. Over the last three decades or so, several infectious diseases surfaced such as Dengue, MERS, SARS,  Zica, Chickengunya, etc. Several lives have been lost in the past but Covid-19 has created a havoc during the last six months since it has already claimed 900,000 lives worldwide alerting WHO and the US CDC.

Covid-19 cases reflect 90% infections in lungs and 10% in heart, kidney and nervous system. It’s difficult to trace and tract 30% of population which is asymptotic. Symptoms of coronavirus include loss of smell, taste, headache, vertigo, vomiting, etc. The virus’s entry into brain causes confusion, convulsion, nerve damage affecting spine , delirium, stroke, memory loss, and blocking of blood vessels. Ideal oxygen level should be around 95%-97%. It’s dangerous if it falls below 90%. Unlike children, elders over 60 years have lower immunity to resist the virus. He strongly recommended boosting immunity through healthy diet, exercise, yoga, and breathing.

Dr. Thakore discussed about various medicines and trial stages of vaccines. He also mentioned about the duration of the virus on surfaces of plastics, papers, and other items which maybe listened in his recorded lecture. Interesting Q&As clarified viewers’ queries. He was applauded for his scholarly presentation.

Dr. Thakore’s profile is attached.

(B) Musical Program:

Mr. Mandeep Devashryee, a versatile singer from Ahmedabad, entertained viewers for an hour and a half with Mohammad Rafi’s songs. In his melodious voice, he sang several songs including Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padhkar, Nazar Na Lag Jaaye, Akele Hain Chale Aao, Darde Dil Darde Jigar Dil Me Jagaya Aapne, Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue, Likhe Jo Khat Tujse Wo Teri Yaad Mein, Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko Kisiki Nazar Na Lage, among others. He capped the program with a Gujarati song Nayan Ne Bandh Rakhi Ne Mein Jyare Tamne Joya Chhe. His guru Saurinbhai also sang a beautiful song. Viewers applauded his performance.

A vote of Thanks by Mr. Pulin Bhatt.

  1. Ms. Suhag Mehta:

Ms. Suhag Mehta, the pioneer of the Ganesh Utsav in New York, thanked viewers for their unconditional support and generous Yogdan in the form of Tan, Man and Dhan. The five-day festival last month blended religious rituals and a bonanza of entertainment items. She acknowledged valuable and tireless services provided by the key team members.

  1. Birthday Celebration:

Mrs. Varshaben Parikh’s (EC Member) 70th birthday was celebrated on September 8 by her family members, relatives, personal friends and countless number of our Center’s members. It was well organized by Pankajbhai Parikh, VP, and is placed on YouTube. The link is:

  1. Dr. R. P. Shah:

Dr. R. P. Shah was honored by Gujarati Literary Academy UK on September 5, 2020 on Zoom where he and his wife Dr. Binita Shah performed an emotional drama Bukani  Bandhelo Snowman, wherein the role played by her was striking as her dialogue with the Charotar (Gujarat) language was amazing. The drama, originally performed some 40 years ago, still reflects the message about life values, self interest, desires, self consciousness and conflicting viewpoints of a married couple. The Zoom viewers applauded the performance. The drama was performed live during the Panama Canal cruise trip.

Mrs. Rakshaben Pandya (Rohitbhai’s wife) also played an impressive role in another short drama. Mr. Vipulbhai Kalyani, President of Gujarati Literary Academy UK, adroitly emceed the event and appreciated the literary and dramatic skills of Dr. R. P. Shah.
