“Aging is not ‘lost youth’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength.”
PRESIDENT’S REPORT # 12 - Mukund Mehta
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Dear Friends:
Hope you’re doing fine and staying healthy. Many of you were at the June 4 Zoom comedy program of Dr. Avani Vyas from Rajkot, India. Let’s say a few words about what we have been witnessing in America.
1. Unrest and Chaos in America:
As if America didn’t have enough problems with the Coronavirus, the country was besieged with riots and unrest. The video of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of the Minneapolis Police was the tipping point after similar couple of sad events involving police encounters in preceding months. The amalgamation of these events, misery brought by the Coronavirus, and extremely high rate of unemployment unleashed the anger and frustration by the African-American community. Unfortunately, bad elements in the society wrought a havoc by looting at an unprecedented rate forcing the boarding up of countless number of stores in Manhattan and elsewhere.
In the midst of the riots and looting, Mr. Ashok Vyas of iTV Gold timely interviewed NYC Council Member and Public Safety Chair Mr. Donovan Richards who aptly described the racial inequality and suggested measures to escalate police-community relationships. Mr. Vyas invited me to join in the discussion and I shared in my two cents. The half-an-hour interview may be viewed at the following link:

Although the African-American community is classified as a minority group, we, the people from India, comparatively form a microscopic minority in the U.S. In order to promote visibility of Indians on a national scale, it is essential that we fill out the 2020 Census form. At our February Valentine’s Day at Antun’s, Prof Raj Vangapaty had urged us to submit the census forms which don’t ask about immigration or citizenship status. The Census forms can be obtained and submitted online.
2. Dr. Avani Vyas’s Comedy Program:
Through the courtesy of our members Mr. & Mrs. Bharatbhai and Neelaben Goradia, seniors enjoyed Dr. Avani Vyas’s comedy program on Zoom from Rajkot, India on June 4. The only female popular stand up comedian’s one-hour non-stop jokes regaled viewers. It’s amazing that she has blended her Ayurvedic practice with comedy providing a powerful dose of laughter to her patients. Thanks to Dr. Avani Vyas for sparing her valuable time with us.
Our thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Bharatbhai and Neelaben Goradia for providing our Center a complimentary program. This was a third such program for the benefit of our members.
