PRESIDENT’S REPORT # 122 - Mukund Mehta

PRESIDENT’S  REPORT

Dear Friends:

The following is a brief report of the Zoom meeting held on Thursday, October 21, 2021. The meeting was anchored by Mr. Pankaj Parikh, VP, and hosted by Mr. Jagdish Patel, VP-PR and co-hosted by Mr. Niranjan Patel, Secretary. Proceedings of the meeting have been placed on YouTube by Mr. Jagdish Patel. Thanks to all.

Thanks to Bank of Baroda as a Grand Benefactor for Silver Jubilee Celebrations 2021-2022. Also thanks to our member Mr. Ashok Sheth for liaising with the Bank.

The meeting started with a prayer by Mrs. Bhartiben Parikh.

1 (i) DR. NILESH SONI’S PRESENTATION:

President welcomed members and introduced Dr. Nilesh Soni (profile attached) who has given lectures at our Center numerous times in the past and who is a member of the Center and considers it as his extended family. Today’s subject was Graceful Aging: Mastering mobility and overcoming aches & pains.

Regarding effects of aging, Dr. Soni explained the gradual slow down of the functioning of the central nervous system after the age 40 resulting in a slow coordination with the eye (reduced reaction) and ear (diminished hearing). Also, cardiac output is reduced by 40% after the age of 60, causing less oxygen in blood and lowering lungs capacity. Therefore, pain sets in as we grow old. Moreover, chronic diseases of blood pressure, diabetes, cancer aggravate the pain.

Dr. Soni showed slides of healthy and decaying knee joints and spine due to wear and tear. He explained about the persistent pain and some of the factors involved such as stress, fatigue, depression, muscle tension, poor sleep, mood swings and decreased appetite. People normally consider pain as a part of life without exploring the underlying cause thereof.

How to tackle the issue of aches and pains? The answer is that some changes are necessary, e.g., forming new habits, change in life style, more socializing, managing stress, increasing physical activities, regular exercise, mindfulness, relaxation, medication, biofeedback, use of TENS (electric machine), and physical and occupational therapies. Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity, improves joint flexibility, improves balance and strengthens muscles by weight lifting as they are reduced 10% every 10 years.

For graceful aging, don’t accept pain as a part of life – find out the underlying cause of the pain. Some important steps are: (a) pursue hobbies of traveling, hiking, cooking reading, gardening, dancing (Garba), (b) involve physical movements, (c) get out of your normal protected environment – meet friends, walk with neighbors, visit museums and temples, (d) keep love alive – with spouse, family, love yourself, take care of your preferences, (e) form a habit of laughing even on your own mistakes.

The Q&A session was interesting and informative. About 250+ viewers (150 Zoom logins) were glued to their seats for an hour and a half intently listening Dr. Soni’s scholarly presentation. He was gracious enough to share his contact: dynamicpts@gmail.com and 917 207 2950

Viewers applauded Dr. Soni’s presentation.

(ii) Musical Program:

Mr. Vipin Aneja (profile attached) of Mumbai, a versatile top notch playback singer entertained viewers with Bollywood songs and ghazals. Mr. Bharatbhai Goradia introduced him.

Bharatbhai has invited outstanding artists and singers to the Center for the sole purpose of entertaining seniors. Today’s program completed his promise that he will bring artists and singers for at least 25 programs for the Center’s Silver Jubilee Year. President requested him to break his record and continue to bring more and more artists for the benefit of our members. As stated in the past, he is a Cultural Ambassador between India and the U.S. His selfless service to entertain seniors by talented artists for a very nominal token fee is very much appreciated. Thanks Bharatbhai.

During the program today, President received a phone call from our member Mr. Mukesh Kapadia of Toronto, Canada, requesting Bharatbhai to fulfill his and other seniors’ wish to share his contact information to the audience which would be useful to inquire about availability of talented artists for their private programs. Mr. Kapadia mentioned that his similar request placed on Chat in the past programs inquiring Bharatbhai’s contact was blocked on the screen. President assured him that his Chat request of contact information will be displayed on the screen and in fact was displayed today. Bharatbhai’s contact: bharatgoradia@gmail.comand 917 355 4247.
