PRESIDENT’S REPORT # 139 - Mukund Mehta

PRESIDENT’S  REPORT

Dear Friends:

The following is a brief report of the Zoom meeting held on Thursday, February 3, 2022. The meeting was anchored by Mr. Pankaj Parikh, VP, and hosted by Mr. Niranjan Patel, Secretary. Proceedings of the meeting were placed on YouTube by Mr. Jagdish Patel, VP-PR. Thanks to all.

The meeting started with a prayer by Mrs. Bhanumatiben Jyotishi.

President welcomed members and requested them to observe a moment of silence to pay tribute to the departed soul of Dr. Milin Masrani, 61, the son of our member Dr. Maltiben Masrani, who passed away in Bombay on Monday. Our condolences and sympathies to the family. May God rest his soul in peace. Condolence messages may be sent at aya1958@aol.com

1 (i) Dr. Nilesh Soni’s Presentation:

Dr. Nilesh Soni (profile attached) has addressed our members several times in the past. His topic for today was “Reducing Opioid use: The Role of Physical Therapy in Managing Pain.” His message was to avoid medications for the pain of joints and spine, if possible; instead try physical therapy first. Of late, the use of opioid has become rampant which takes a daily toll of 130 lives.

Dr. Soni’s advice was to try to find out the underlying cause of the pain since the joint and spine pains could be due to age-related degeneration of wears and tears. It is estimated that people over 60 generally spend about three weeks in a year for pain management.

In order to avoid opioids, Dr. Soni suggested several steps, e.g., (i) rest and pacing your activities and use medications only if pain persists, (ii) hot water shower, icy hot, massage, physical therapy, electro-therapy gadgets which block pain signals to brain, ultrasound, manual therapy by specialists focusing on injured muscles, Myofacial Release Technique, Trigger Point Release, ointments, acupuncture, acupressure, and (iii) exercise.

Acute (sudden) pain due to injury, disease and infection necessitates complete rest and medications. Avoid exercise. Neuro mobilization technique is used for nerve-related pains, e.g., in sciatic , neck, etc.

An interesting Q&As session followed which was informative and educative. The attendance was robust as about 275 Zoom viewers (roughly 170 logins) were glued to their seats with a rapt attention. They appreciated Dr. Soni’s down-to- earth presentation in Gujarati with the aid of slides. We thank Dr. Soni for sparing his valuable time.

(ii) Musical Program:

Singers Bhavesh & Jigna Bhatt from India entertained viewers with Bollywood songs and a Garba Ramzat. The program was arranged through Mr. Bharatbhai Goradia who introduced the singers (profile attached.)
