PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear Friends:

PLEASE VOTE ON ELECTION DAY – NOVEMBER 3, 2020

The following is a brief report of the Center’s Thursday, October 29, 2020 Zoom meeting organized this week. The report is abbreviated as the meeting was recorded and promptly placed on YouTube by our member Jyotindrabhai Patel. Thanks Jyotindrabhai.

1. The October 29th Meeting:

The meeting started with a prayer by Mr. & Mrs. Harendrabhai & Pragnaben Sevak.

In his welcome address, President thanked today’s sponsor Mr. & Mrs. Harendrabhai & Pragnaben Sevak, who were introduced to viewers by Pankajbhai Parikh, VP. President cautioned seniors to avoid attending large gatherings since the second wave of Coronavirus has emerged in several states in the U.S. and European countries.

(A) Musical Program:

Shyamal and Gargi unleashed old songs which seniors enjoyed reminiscing their youthful days. The duo kicked off with a Happy Birthday song of Baar Baar Din Yeh Aaye for Harendrabhai’s 80th birthday who joined the club of octogenarians. Thereafter, a series of evergreen – સદાબહાર songs kept viewers glued to their seats and frequently shown dancing to the rhythm from their homes reflecting their enthusiasm.

Songs included Mein Kya Janu Kya Jadu Hai, Awaaz De Kahan Hai, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum, Jawaan Hai Mohabbat Hasi Hai Jamaana, Jo Wada Kiya Woh Nibhana Padega, Sau Saal Pehle Muzhe Tumse Pyaar Tha, Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Mein Hum, Madhuvan Mein Radhika Nache Re, Radhika Tune Bansari Churayi, Tari Aankh No Afini, Kahun Chhun Jawani Ne Paachhi Vali Ja, Hothon Se Chhu Lo Tum Mera Geet Amar Kar Do, Madhav Kyany Nathi Madhuvanman, among others.

The pair’s melodious voice and selection of songs revved up viewers.

(B) Dr. Shyam Rao’s Presentation:

Dr. Shyam Rao, highly experienced physician in hospital emergency matters, gave a down-to-earth advice to seniors for an hour about the various facets surrounding hospital emergency visits. He succinctly discussed the subject with the aid of slides analyzing a series of diseases which demand prompt action to call 911 and have the diagnosis evaluated at hospitals. He distinguished the type of questions asked in emergency room to youngsters, who usually have very few serious ailments compared to elders who could have a history of blood pressures, heart blockages, diabetes, kidney, lung problems, memory loss, depression, cancer, to name just a few.

Dr. Rao narrated various symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, high fever, vomiting, skin rash, deftness, stroke,  bleeding, urination problems, overdose of medicines, confusion, etc., which need immediate attention and diagnosis at hospital emergency room. Seniors are more prone to develop these types of urgent issues. Time is of the essence for patients developing stroke symptoms.

One of the major problems faced by Seniors is a FALL. Dr. Rao elaborated steps to prevent falls. Our Center had recently sent to members Dr. Nalini Juthani’s email which outlined precautions against falls.

Dr. Rao clarified that patients are not denied medical treatments  in emergency room based on their legal status or lack of insurance. He strongly suggested everyone to carry a list of doctors, medicines, medical history, allergies, healthcare proxy, etc. while visiting emergency room. Also, he recommended to have someone accompany a patient.

To combat Covid-19 , Dr. Rao cautioned seniors to avoid large scale gatherings and follow CDC guidelines. Interesting Q&As followed.

Viewers appreciated Dr. Rao’s practical suggestions and applauded for his valuable advice.

Dr. Rao’s profile is attached.
