PRESIDENT’S REPORT # 98 & 99 - Mukund Mehta
 

Dear Friends:

The following are brief reports of the Zoom meetings held on Thursday, July 15 and Saturday, July 17, 2021. Proceedings of the meetings were recorded and will be placed on YouTube. The meetings were anchored by Pankajbhai Panrikh, VP, hosted by Jagdishbhai Patel, VP-PR and co-hosted by Niranjanbhai Patel, Secretary. A PowerPoint presentation was prepared by Jyotindrabhai Patel, Past President, GSNY. Thanks to all.

1. THE JULY 15TH MEETING:

The meeting started with a prayer by Mrs. Ashaben Dharawat.

(i) Dr. Vipul Patel’s Presentation:

President welcomed members and informed about Dr. Vipul Patel’s medical presentation followed by a musical program. He introduced Dr. Patel (profile attached) and thanked him for his frequent presentations at our Center for the benefit of seniors.

Discussing today’s topic of Common Problems Faced by the Elderly, Dr. Patel gave a bird’s eye view of a smorgasbord of medical problems confronting seniors and early precautions necessary to minimize future impacts so as to live a healthy life. Armed with a host of slides, he described geriatric symptoms including back & neck, osteoporosis, lungs, diabetes, depression, balance, hearing, eyes, heart, falls, stroke, kidney, deep vain thrombosis, among others.

Dr. Patel strongly urged seniors to make advance arrangements to have power of attorney, health proxy, will, DNR (do not resuscitate) and DNI (do not intubate) to minimize problems in nursing homes, hospitals and hospice care and lessen psychological trauma for family members. He stressed on stretching exercises, socialization, crossword puzzles, Yoga, weight loss and nutritional diet as well as to take vaccines for flu, shingles and pneumonia based on primary physician’s advice. He encouraged seniors to have a lifeline alarm device, and Apple/Android watch. Periodical checkups should be made for blood sugar, mammogram, PSA, colonoscopy, endoscopy, Pap smear. Use night lights, pill box, vaseline instead of sunscreen.

Regarding diet, Dr. Patel recommended Bajri, Kodri, Rajigaro avoiding wheat and excessive salt and sugar.

Dr. Patel’s down-to-earth explanation on a myriad of medical problems in Gujarati was revved by viewers.

(ii) Musical Program:

Sagota Chakrbarty, a music virtuoso, her daughter and students entertained viewers with Bollywood songs. Renu Gupte anchored the program.

The program was arranged through our member Bharatbhai Goradia, Cultural Ambassador between the U.S. and India. This was his twentieth program for the benefit of seniors. His selfless service was appreciated by the Center. It was gratifying to note that he was instrumental in initiating and coordinating Rs. 35 lakhs critical care ambulance for J J Hospital in Mumbai drawing appreciation (copy attached) from Lions Club. Congratulations Bharatbhai.

Singers covered a range of songs including Mausum Hai Aashiqana, Jata Kahan Hai Diwane, Hai Apna Dil To Awara, Chala Jata Hoon Kisi Ki Dhoon Mein, Ja Re Ja Re Ud Ja Re Panchhi, Ekla Chalo Re, Damadam Mast Qalandar, Haal Kaisa Hai Janab Ka, Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum, Tara Vina Shyam Mane, Ye Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge, Ye Vatan Tere Liye.

Viewers enjoyed the melodious voice of singers.

(iii) Contributions :

(iv) Pankajbhai Parikh, VP, briefed about the Housie game, picnic and the Janmashtami festival.

Niranjanbhai Patel, Secretary, provided details of future programs.

2. THE JULY 17TH MEETING:

The meeting started with a prayer by Mr. & Mrs. Jyotindrabhai & Paranjyotiben Patel. Happy birthday in advance to Jyotindrabhai.

President welcomed members and requested to observe a moment of silence to pay tribute to Smt. Diwaliben (Diwali Ba) Toprani who passed away and for whom we had very recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

(i) Musical Program:

President thanked Parker Jewish Institute for sponsoring today’s musical program of Binaca Geetmala by the SurSangam group of Sachin & Surabhi Dhomne, Nagpur, India. The famous and coveted Binaca Geetmala program, which started in 1952, was talk of the town in good old days which our 600-700 viewers (380 Zoom logins) reminisced and enjoyed.

Singers Surabhi, Mukul, Shriya, Mangesh, Sachin and Dr. Salpekar unleashed a series of old songs including Ye Zindagi Usi Ki Hain, Jadugar Saiyan Chhod Mori Baiyan, Jaye To Jaye Kahan, Mera Juta Hai Japani, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahan, Hai Apna Dil To Awara, Haal Kaisa Hai Janab Ka, Zindagi Bhar Nahin Bhoolegi, Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko, Ehsan Tera Hoga Muzh Par, Jo Wada Kiya Woh Nibhana, Mere Man Ki Ganga, Baharon Phool Barsao, Sawan Ka Mahina, Bindiya Chamkegi, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar Main Kya Jaanu, Zindagi Ek Safar Suhana, Dum Maro Dum, Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, O Saathi Re, Mere Angane Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam, Shayad MeriShaadi Ka Khayal, Sun Sahiba Sun, Chitthi Aayi Hai, Papa Kehte Hai Bada Naam Karenga, among others.

Dr. Manoj Salpekar whose voice resembles that of Amin Sayani anchored the program.

President gave a brief introduction of Parker to viewers. Sujata Seth, Public Affairs Associate, provided overview of the Parker facility. Lina Scacco, VP, Corporate Engagement and Community Health Services, succinctly summarized services provided by Parker. Drs. Saroj and Indravadan Shah, pioneers of the India Unit at Parker, explained to viewers the benefits of availing treatments at Parker which provides the Indian atmosphere for patients.

President felicitated Lina Scacco with a plaque (copy attached) in appreciation of Parker providing culturally-competent and linguistically-appropriate services to India Unit.

(ii) India Home:

President was pleased to inform viewers that India Home is the first South Asian organization to receive an NYC government housing grant of $1.8 million.

(iii) Our Center’s Growth:

Reviewing the progress of our Center during the last six years, President mentioned a meteoric growth in membership from 500+ to almost 1,500. The Center’s financial health is worth noting since its bank balance jumped from $80,000 to $450,000 during the last six years.

(iv) Pankajbhai Parikh, VP, briefed about the Housie game on 7/24th, picnic on 8/1st which is full to its capacity, and the Janmashtami festival starting 8/12th appealing members for sponsorships.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sandip Sheth’s presentation is planned on Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

Thereafter, a musical program by singer Meena Trivedy, London, U.K., is planned from 12:00pm to 1:30pm (arranged through Bharatbhai Goradia).

(v) Janmashtami Mahotsav:

Janmashtami Mahotsav Celebration is planned for four Thursdays, August 12, 19, 26 and September 2, and four Saturdays August 14, 21, 28 and September 4, 2021. Details to follow.

(vi) Mrs. Purnima Desai:

A presentation by Mrs. Purnima Desai, Certified Master REIKI Healer on REIKI- A Sacred Science is planned on Thursday, September 30, 2021 from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

(vii) Vishnu Sahasranam:

As advised earlier, Dr. Narendra Bhalodkar’s program on Vishnu Sahsranam is on every Monday from 9:45am to 11:45am/12:00pm. His next program will be on Monday, July 19, 2021.

(viii) Bhajan Sandhya:

Spiritual Development Center (Adhyatmik Vikas Kendra) organizes Bhajan Sandhya every Friday from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. For information, pl contact Paragbhai Patel, President, at 646 496 7748.
